The Columbus Blue Jackets have suffered their fifth consecutive defeat, falling 2-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, April 2nd, 2026. Despite a goal from Denton Mateychuk, Columbus continues to struggle, remaining one point behind the New York Islanders in the race for a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Carolina clinched a playoff berth with the victory.

Stankoven scored twice for Carolina, while Hall and Aho each contributed with two assists. The Hurricanes’ strong performance secured their place in the postseason, while the Blue Jackets’ losing streak raises concerns about their playoff hopes.

The Blue Jackets’ recent struggles have been compounded by a chaotic game against the New York Islanders on December 28, 2025, which involved a brawl sparked by a tripping call and a retaliatory move from Islanders star Mat Barzal. Barzal was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for slashing Columbus forward Mason Marchment after Marchment took out Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer.

“I think he’s p—ed off, felt it was a dirty play on Schaef,”

Adam Pelech of the New York Islanders told the New York Post after the game.

The incident led to a scrum, with players from both teams attempting to defend their teammates. Islanders center Kyle Maclean emphasized the importance of supporting Barzal, stating, “He’s a young guy, one of your best players. So there’s ways to go about things, but it’s good to see Barzy do something. We got his back there. It’s a penalty we’ll kill, I think. So it’s good to see…”

Prior to the Hurricanes game, the Blue Jackets had lost to the New York Islanders on March 23, 2026. The Islanders’ victory moved them into a wild-card position, further intensifying the competition for playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers, Senators, and Red Wings are also vying for a wild card berth, creating a tight race as the regular season nears its conclusion.

The Blue Jackets’ current losing streak consists of four regulation losses and one overtime loss. The team’s inability to secure wins has put them in a precarious position, requiring them to perform exceptionally well in their remaining games to have a chance at making the playoffs.

The Hurricanes, are enjoying a successful season and have secured their playoff spot with the win over Columbus. Their strong offensive performance, led by Stankoven, Hall, and Aho, has been a key factor in their success.
