Chainat Provincial Public Health Office Addresses Case of Nurse Injecting Wrong Medicine

Chainat Provincial Public Health Office has issued a statement regarding the case of a nurse injecting the wrong medicine, causing a patient to fall into a coma.

Case Background

Ms. Phonnapat Muangsakul, 33, traveled from Chainat Province to Bangkok to seek justice for her brother, who was misdiagnosed and given the wrong injection at a hospital in Chainat Province.

On September 13, 2024, the patient was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of fever. The doctor ordered a glucose injection due to low blood sugar, but the nurse mistakenly administered a heart medicine, causing the patient to have a seizure.

Current Status of the Patient

The patient’s condition worsened, and he was transferred to Chainat Hospital’s intensive care unit for further treatment. After more than 10 days in the ICU, the patient’s condition has not improved, and he remains distracted, with a hard tongue, and unable to answer questions.

The patient has developed pneumonia and requires long-term treatment. The doctor has informed the family that the patient may not be able to walk normally after being discharged from the hospital due to weakness in his legs.

Response from Chainat Provincial Public Health Office

Mr. Panlop Yodsirajinda, a doctor from Chainat Provincial Public Health, stated that the patient had come for treatment with stomach bleeding and an infection in the bloodstream, which lowered his blood sugar.

The hospital doctor had ordered a glucose injection, but the nurse mistakenly took the wrong medicine and administered a heart medicine instead. The hospital took immediate action to provide emergency care and coordinated with specialist doctors to provide further treatment.

The nurse who administered the wrong injection has been transferred to a ward where patient care is not required, and the hospital is taking steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Assurance from the Ministry

The Ministry has instructed the hospital to pay maximum attention to the case, and the patient will not have to pay for any treatment. The patient is currently in a safe condition and has been moved out of the intensive care unit.
