Comeback King: Defending Champion Stages Thrilling Turnaround to Claim Opening Match Victory
Świętek Secures Come-From-Behind Victory at WTA Finals Riyadh
The Women’s Tennis WTA Finals Riyadh (Saudi Arabia/Riyadh, Hard) kicked off on the 3rd, with the second seed Iga Świętek (Poland) defeating 8th seed Barbora Krečková (Czech Republic) 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the singles orange group.
This tournament marks the last event of the season, featuring the top eight players in terms of points earned this season. Eight players will be divided into groups of four to compete in a preliminary round robin, with the top two from each group advancing to the semifinals.
Świętek, ranked second in the world and the defending champion, faced Krečková, ranked 13th, in her first match. In the first set, Świętek conceded a break in the first game and failed to capitalize on three break-back opportunities in the sixth game.
In the second set, Świętek allowed two breaks and fell to 0-3 but remained aggressive, breaking three times to take the set.
In the final set, Świętek used her momentum to break first, winning five games in a row and securing a come-from-behind victory in 2 hours and 33 minutes.
Świętek shared her thoughts on the match, stating, “We played a lot of (practice) matches like this, but for a while I forgot what it felt like to feel a little different stress and emotions. Of course, I needed time to adapt. The most important thing is, even though something like that happened, I managed to get through it. And I was able to be patient and wait until it got better.”
Świętek will face third seed Coco Gauff (USA) in the second match. Gauff defeated sixth seed Jessica Pegula (USA) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in the first match held on the same day, earning her one win.
