President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to sign into law a measure postponing the December 1, 2025, Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), according to a confirmation from the Palace. This means a shift in the election timeline and an extension of the terms for current barangay and SK officials.Let’s break down what this means for you and what’s happening with voter registration.
What Does This Postponement Mean?
Currently, barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials serve three-year terms. With the signing of this new law, their terms will be extended to four years. The elections will now be held in November 2026, giving current officials an additional year in office.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia revealed that the Office of the Executive Secretary has scheduled a formal signing ceremony for the BSKE postponement bill on August 12th at 2 p.m. “If that’s the case, then it’s very clear that the elections on Dec. 1 will not push through,” Garcia stated during a recent registration activity in Pampanga.
But don’t think that means everything stops!
Voter Registration Continues - Don’t Delay!
Despite the impending postponement, the Comelec is continuing with the special registration period, which runs until August 10th. This is incredibly important, especially for young Filipinos eager to participate in the SK elections.
Chairman Garcia emphasized that the Comelec won’t halt registration within this 10-day window. “We will continue all of this within the 10-day period,” he assured.
Why is this so crucial? Because even tho the election date has shifted, ensuring you’re registered is vital for future participation. The Comelec anticipates around 1 million new registrants, with approximately half being youth voters for the SK elections.Don’t miss your chance to make your voice heard!
What Happens After the President Signs?
Signing the bill isn’t the final step. According to Garcia, the law must frist be officially published before it takes affect. Furthermore, the postponement coudl still face challenges and potential legal hurdles, including a possible challenge before the Supreme Court.
He also cautioned about the possibility of a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO). “If a temporary restraining order (TRO) is issued and the commission is unprepared, it could lead to a crisis,” Garcia explained. The Comelec is preparing for all possibilities to ensure a smooth transition, whatever the outcome.
why Register Now, Even with the Uncertainty?
Garcia reiterated the importance of ongoing registration, particularly for 15- to 17-year-old voters. “The ongoing registration is crucial to ensure 15- to 17-year-old voters can participate, regardless of the status of the BSKE,” he said.Think of it this way: registering now secures your place on the voter rolls, ensuring you’re ready to exercise your right to vote when the elections do take place in November 2026. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by.
Don’t wait - head to your local Comelec office before August 10th to register and be prepared for the future of barangay and SK governance. Your participation matters!
