Comic Con Africa returned to Johannesburg, bringing together fans, creators, and pop culture enthusiasts to celebrate gaming, comics, anime, movies, and television through immersive experiences and creative displays. Cosplay remained one of the festival’s largest attractions as attendees transformed themselves into beloved characters from various franchises.
Anime and Gaming Cosplay Inspirations
Several participants at the event spoke about the specific media that inspired their intricate costumes. One attendee arrived dressed as The Terror from Genshin Impact, explaining that the character’s different forms influenced their design choices with a particular focus on the Moon God form. Other creators drew from entirely original ideas or unique personal interpretations. An attendee known as Soft designed a look based on personal creative concepts, while a cosplayer named Light Shaddow showcased a distinct individual take on a character. The popular anime series Chainsaw Man also served as a major source of inspiration. One fan spent approximately two days completing a costume representing the character Denji. Megan White and her cosplay partner brought characters from the anime Witch Hat Atelier to life after watching the series together. The pair handmade nearly all of their main costume pieces, leaving only items such as shoes, leggings, and hair out of their direct fabrication.
Film and Television Recreations
Other participants turned to major film and television franchises for their projects. Joshua Lange, known online as Gothic Nerd King, drew inspiration from the video game and media property Silent Hill Homecoming. Lange spent between three and four weeks hand-making and hand-painting his entire costume. Dan Jordan selected a character from The Mandalorian and the broader Star Wars universe, utilizing a 3D printer and scanned prop files to recreate the character’s gear. Jordan sanded and primed the printed pieces to achieve a screen-accurate appearance, noting that bringing his favorite Star Wars character to life was a rewarding endeavor. The extensive craftsmanship on display underscored the dedication of the Comic Con Africa cosplay community.
