The victory in the $175,000 stakes race for three-year-olds matched a stakes record set by Itsmyluckyday in 2013, when the event was known as the Gulfstream Park Derby. Commandment finished the one-mile race with a final time of 1:38.23.
Race Progression and Tactics
Breaking from the rail as the 1-2 favorite in a field of seven, Commandment saved ground and tracked the pace in fourth position. Cabourg set the early pace, recording an opening quarter-mile in 24.09 seconds, while Epic Summer pressed from second. Thunder Chuck, a 21-1 longshot, sat in third.

As the field passed the half-mile mark in 47.38 seconds, Cabourg began to retreat, allowing Epic Summer to take the lead midway through the far turn. Thunder Chuck continued to chase in second, with Epic Summer crossing the six-furlong mark in 1:10.16.
Commandment remained in fifth position at that stage, trailing by less than two lengths. On the final turn, he split horses to find a path and dominated down the lane, accelerating away from the field to claim the victory. Roger That Dana rallied to finish second, 1 ¾ lengths ahead of Thunder Chuck in third.
Trainer and Jockey Perspectives
The colt is trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., both of whom topped the 2025 North American earnings leaderboards in their respective roles. Commandment competes for Wathnan Racing, headed by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Big performance. I started him off three-quarters and we thought that he would stretch out off his first run with the big gallop out in his race. We brought him along step by step – I guess furlong by furlong – and he’s responded well.
Brad Cox
Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. Expressed confidence in the horse’s temperament and physical condition, noting that Commandment has a great mind
. Ortiz stated that his strategy was to let him be him and when it was time to roll, find some room and let him do the rest
.
Ortiz also highlighted the horse’s performance after the finish line, stating, He looked really, really good after the race, too.
Career Trajectory and Future Outlook
Commandment has been favored in every start of his career to date. He made his debut on October 4, 2025, at Keeneland in a six-furlong race where he finished fourth. He followed that performance with a victory in a seven-furlong maiden special weight at Churchill Downs on November 1, 2025.
The Mucho Macho Man Stakes serves as the initial step for Gulfstream Park contenders heading toward the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1). That event, which celebrates its 75th running, is scheduled for March 28, 2026, and is considered a leading preparation race for the Triple Crown.
