Bulgaria is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April 1876 Uprising through a series of national exhibitions, academic conferences, and regional initiatives designed to honor the struggle for national independence from Ottoman rule.

Central to the commemorations is the exhibition titled The Bloody Flame of the Bulgarian Easter of 1876, which opened on April 9, 2026, at the National Military History Museum located at 92 Cherkovna Street in Sofia. The exhibition, which remains open until the end of May, was attended by caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov on April 10, 2026.

During the opening, Zapryanov described the uprising as the peak of the Bulgarian revolutionary spirit and the desire for national freedom, noting that the movement was organized and executed by Bulgarians without foreign intervention.

Museum director Sonya Penkova stated that the uprising represents the most powerful expression of the Bulgarian national revolution, characterized by heroism and sacrifice. The museum houses nearly all the flags from the uprising except for three, including the Karlovo flag commissioned by revolutionary Vasil Levski, under which the uprising was declared in Panagyurishte. Other key exhibits include personal weapons belonging to participants such as Panayot Hitov and Panayot Volov, as well as testimonies from contemporaries and responses from foreign writers and statesmen.

Academic Coordination and Historical Analysis

To ensure a unified national approach, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) established an Academic Organizing Committee. Presented by BAS President Evelina Slavcheva on March 13, 2026, the committee is tasked with coordinating scientific conferences, scholarly publications, and lectures across the country.

Slavcheva noted that the committee aims to consolidate fragmented preparations by local schools, authorities, and chitalishte community centres into a dynamic platform and a national calendar of events. Historically, the April Uprising is viewed as an attempt at a bourgeois democratic revolution against the Ottoman feudal system to enable Bulgaria’s capitalist development. Its brutal suppression drew European attention to the Bulgarian question, eventually leading to the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War and the restoration of Bulgarian statehood.

Providing a critical historical perspective, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Hristov of the BAS Institute for Historical Research has observed that while the military successes of the April Uprising were negligible, the victory resided in the spirit of the National Revival.

Regional Commemorations and Artistic Tributes

Commemorative activities have extended to various regions across Bulgaria. In Veliko Tarnovo, Dr. Ivan Tsarov, Director of the Regional History Museum, emphasized on March 22, 2026, that a national celebration was long overdue. Tsarov highlighted the museum’s Museum in a Suitcase initiative, which brings original artifacts from the uprising to pensioners, schoolchildren, and kindergarten students.

Tsarov also noted the role of local blacksmiths during the conflict, who transitioned from producing horseshoes to creating crude weapons and firearms used during the uprising, some of which are preserved in the Regional History Museum.

In Panagyurishte, an international conference dedicated to the April epic has been held. The Mayor of Panagyurishte has characterized the act of celebrating the uprising not as a holiday, but as a pilgrimage.

Other national initiatives include:

  • A national campaign titled The Freedom to Choose Your Own Fate, which has united 13 Bulgarian artists in honor of the 150th anniversary.
  • A series of initiatives in Blagoevgrad dedicated to the memory and bravery of the uprising’s participants.
  • The opening of a renewed alley featuring bas-reliefs at the Apriltsi memorial park.
