[Comment] Navigating health financing cliffs: a new era in global health
Global health funding cuts trigger dramatic impact
Updated June 03, 2025
A period of growth in global health, marked by the UN Millennium Declaration in 2000, has concluded. This era saw increased domestic health spending and development assistance, along with the creation of organizations like the Global Fund and Gavi. Important progress was made in reducing child mortality and controlling infectious diseases.
Though, rapid reductions in development assistance for health by major funders in early 2025 have created dramatic health financing cliffs. This shift has intensified existing pressures on domestic health spending, which experienced its first per capita decrease across all countries as 2000 between 2021 and 2022.
