The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved the concept design for President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot Triumphal Arch on Thursday, April 16, 2026, marking the first formal step in the federal review process for the monument planned near the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

The seven-member commission, all appointed by the Trump administration, voted to advance the arch concept along with two other projects: a plan to repaint the gray granite exterior of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and construction of an underground facility for security screenings of White House visitors.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the submission of the arch design to the Commission of Fine Arts earlier in the week, stating the review would proceed on Thursday as part of the administration’s broader effort to leave a lasting imprint on Washington’s monumental landscape.

During the review, one commissioner recommended removing a Statue of Liberty-like figure and a pair of eagles proposed for the arch’s summit, noting these elements could be eliminated to reduce the structure’s height or simplify its design. The arch remains one of several initiatives tied to the president’s campaign promise to “Make America Safe and Beautiful Again.”

The Commission of Fine Arts described its approval as preliminary, emphasizing that updated designs for all three projects will undergo further review before any final votes are taken. The agency’s process requires multiple stages of evaluation, with the arch’s final design still subject to change based on feedback from commissioners and public input.

AP News reported that the commission’s vote occurred after the White House unveiled the arch plans on Wednesday, with Leavitt characterizing the federal endorsement as progress toward fulfilling a campaign commitment. The approval represents the first time a Trump administration proposal for a major Washington monument has cleared an initial federal review hurdle.

While the arch’s scale and symbolic intent have drawn public attention, the Commission of Fine Arts focused its review on the conceptual design, leaving technical specifications, construction timelines, and funding mechanisms for subsequent phases. The monument’s proposed location between two of the nation’s most visited memorials ensures it will continue to undergo scrutiny from preservation groups, civic organizations, and federal agencies as the project advances.
