Glasgow stepped in to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to financial constraints. The revised, scaled-back Games, featuring fewer sports, athletes, and venues, has reduced costs and attracted potential hosts for future events.
Canada, India, and nigeria have publicly confirmed their interest in hosting the centenary Games in 2030. new Zealand is among the nations considering the 2034 edition.
In January, the Commonwealth Games Federation invited its 74 member nations to submit expressions of interest. The seven positive responses, spanning Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania, will undergo feasibility assessments over the next five months. The host for the 2030 Games is expected to be finalized in November.
Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadleir expressed her delight at the strong interest from four regions. She also acknowledged Scotland’s meaningful role in stepping up to host the 2026 Games with foresight and innovative thinking.
“We are thrilled with the incredible interest from four of our six regions,” Sadleir said.
“We cannot understate the hugely-significant role Scotland has played, having the foresight, tenacity and innovative thinking to step forward and host in 2026.”
Phil Batty,chief executive of Glasgow 2026,believes the upcoming Games will be a pivotal moment in the event’s history,pioneering a new model for major sporting events.
“I have every confidence Glasgow 2026 will pioneer a new model for the major event – one that delivers a accomplished Games on time, on budget and with high-quality sport at the heart of the experience,” Batty said.
