The community of north Inishowen was left heartbroken yesterday as Lewis Kelly, an 18-year-old sportsman from Culdaff, was laid to rest in one of the largest funerals the area has ever seen. Kelly, a promising footballer for Malin GAA and Culdaff FC, passed away peacefully at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin on May 5, just days after falling ill. His funeral mass at St Patrick’s Church, Aughaclay, drew hundreds of mourners, many of whom gathered to honor a young man described as “full of life, full of warmth” and “funny and full of mischief.”
Kelly’s sudden death has left a void in the close-knit community, where he was known for his talent on the field and his vibrant personality off it. He was due to sit his Leaving Cert exams at Carndonagh Community School next month, and his passing has been felt deeply across the region. The outpouring of support for Kelly’s family has been overwhelming, with a fundraising effort surpassing €100,000 to help cover funeral expenses and ease the financial burden on his loved ones.
Lewis Kelly was remembered not only for his athletic achievements but also for his kindness and the positive impact he had on those around him. Friends, teammates, and neighbors spoke of his commitment to his sport, his school, and his community. His funeral was attended by guards of honor from both Malin GAA and Culdaff FC, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he earned during his short life.
Kelly’s family, including his parents Michelle and Hugh, his sister Zevagh, brothers Quinn and Regan, and his girlfriend Darcey, have been surrounded by an outpouring of love and support from the Inishowen community. The fundraising campaign, set up in the name of the local community, has helped ensure that the family can focus on grieving without the added stress of financial hardship.
The funeral mass was followed by a burial at Lagg graveyard, where Kelly will be laid to rest among family and friends. His legacy as a talented athlete and a beloved member of the community will endure in the memories of those who knew him best.
