Community Rallies for 16-Year-Old Hockey Player Hit by Stray Bullet in O’Fallon
Community Supports Family After Hockey Player Shot
Colin Brown, a 16-year-old hockey player, is in critical condition after being hit by a stray bullet on I-55. The shooting occurred while Colin was traveling home with his father after a hockey game. He was in the passenger seat when the gunfire came from the southbound lanes.
The community in O’Fallon, Illinois, is rallying around Colin’s family. More than 100 people attended a prayer vigil at the McKendree Rec Plex to show their support. O’Fallon Hockey Coach Scott Loehring expressed his devastation over the situation. He mentioned how the randomness of the event hit close to home for him, as he also makes similar drives with his children multiple times a week.
Colin played for O’Fallon for several years and is currently part of the Afton Americans and CBC teams. Former teammate Chase Green, now a coach, shared how Colin had grown into a leader on the team.
The Dawg Nation Hockey Foundation, a nonprofit focused on supporting amateur hockey players, began raising money for Colin’s family right after hearing the news. Many people reached out and donated to help.
Jared Schmierbach, president of Dawg Nation, reassured the family not to worry about finances during this tough time. Coach Loehring echoed this sentiment, telling the family they are not alone and that the community stands together with them.
Afton Americans and CBC are also joining the fundraising efforts. To support Colin’s family, visit the Dawg Nation website.
