Exclusive Interview: Jia Yongzhi, New Chairman of Taipei 101, Addresses Controversy and Vision for the Future
News Directory 3: Thank you for joining us today, Mr. Jia. Your recent appointment as chairman of Taipei 101 has stirred quite a bit of discussion. Can you share your perspective on the reactions from major shareholders regarding this leadership change?
Jia Yongzhi: Thank you for having me. I must say, while there has been some surprise among shareholders, my meetings with figures like Itochu Chairman Masahiro Okafuji during my recent trip to Japan proved otherwise. If our Japanese counterparts were genuinely taken aback, they would not have received me with such respect and warmth. It speaks to the trust they have in our direction moving forward.
ND3: Your predecessor, Chia Yongjie, addressed allegations of inappropriate employee dismissals. How do you plan to foster a transparent and cohesive work environment at Taipei 101?
Jia Yongzhi: Transparency is indeed crucial. I believe in open communication and maintaining a culture where employees feel valued and understood. My aim is to build strong relationships based on trust and clarity. The past controversies, including those raised by my predecessor, remind us of the importance of honest discourse within our organization.
ND3: Recently, a lighting display at Taipei 101 sparked criticism for allegedly using public resources for personal gain. How do you respond to those accusations?
Jia Yongzhi: It’s important to clarify that I did not intend for the display to be controversial. Initially, I reached out to several sponsors for support, and it was a challenge to secure backing for such a vision. However, the ten companies that stepped up believed in the concept and chose to invest. I decided to feature “Dechert Group Yongji Together” due to the timing of a competition that our Taiwanese team was participating in. When they won, it felt fitting to celebrate their achievement.
ND3: The choice of November 18 for the lighting ceremony seems significant. What led you to select this date?
Jia Yongzhi: The date was chosen strategically. It coincides with the conclusion of the mentioned competition, which was a significant event for our local team. Given the importance of celebration, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to honor their success, as it ties into our vision for Taipei 101 as a symbol of pride for our community.
ND3: Looking ahead, what are your main priorities for Taipei 101 under your leadership?
Jia Yongzhi: My main priorities include enhancing the cultural significance of Taipei 101 and ensuring it remains a vibrant hub of activity. I aim to strengthen our connections with local and international partners, innovate our offerings, and continue to uphold Taipei 101 as not just an architectural marvel, but a beacon of progress and unity for our city.
ND3: Thank you, Mr. Jia, for shedding light on these matters. We look forward to seeing how your leadership shapes the future of Taipei 101.
Jia Yongzhi: Thank you for the opportunity to discuss these important topics. I am excited about what lies ahead for Taipei 101 and our community.
Jia noted that she chose November 18 for the lighting ceremony because it coincided with the conclusion of a competition involving a Taiwanese team. Her husband’s company, the Dechert Group, supported the project, and since the team won, they decided to add celebratory words to the display as well.
