Complete Child Immunization During Nataru Holidays, Expert Urges
Protect Your Child’s Health This Holiday Season: Experts Urge Complete Immunizations
As families prepare for the holiday season, health experts are reminding parents about the importance of keeping their children up-to-date on vaccinations. Dr. Siti Habsyah Masri,a pediatrician with the Indonesian pediatricians Association (IDAI) in Jakarta, emphasizes that immunizations are crucial for safeguarding children’s health, especially during times of increased social gatherings and potential exposure to illnesses.
“Please complete the recommended immunization schedule from IDAI for 2024,” dr. Masri advises. “The schedule is readily available.”
IDAI’s 2024 immunization recommendations include a range of vaccines designed to protect against various diseases:
Hepatitis B, Polio, and BCG (Bacillus calmette-Guérin): These vaccines protect against serious liver infections, paralytic diseases, and tuberculosis, respectively.
DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis): This combination vaccine safeguards against three perhaps life-threatening bacterial infections.
Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b): This vaccine protects against a bacterium that can cause meningitis, pneumonia, and other serious infections.
PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine): This vaccine helps prevent pneumonia and other pneumococcal diseases.
Rotavirus Vaccine: This vaccine protects against rotavirus,a common cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children.
MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella): This vaccine protects against three highly contagious viral diseases.
Influenza Vaccine: This vaccine helps protect against seasonal influenza.
Dengue Vaccine: This vaccine helps protect against dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral illness.
* HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine: This vaccine protects against HPV, a virus that can cause cervical cancer and other cancers. While some of these vaccines are included in the government’s routine immunization program, others, like the influenza vaccine, are not currently provided free of charge. Dr. Masri encourages parents to consider these additional vaccines for their children’s well-being.
“Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect children from serious diseases,” Dr. Masri emphasizes. “It helps them grow and develop optimally, and it reduces the risk of severe illness, disability, and even death.”
In Jakarta, the coverage rate for complete basic immunizations in 2022 reached 77%, falling short of the 90% target. Nationally, however, immunization coverage reached 94.9% in 2022, showing progress compared to 2019.
Parents can access immunization services at local puskesmas (community health centers) to ensure their children are fully protected.
