Researchers have successfully mapped the complete nervous system of a male fruit fly, identifying millions of connections across 166,000 neurons, according to a study published in the scientific journal Cell. Led by the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, the project builds on a previous female brain map to reveal how a five percent difference in neural wiring dictates distinct behaviors like male aggression, visual tracking during courtship, and the production of specific mating songs.

Constructing the 3D Male Fly Brain Map

To build the detailed wiring diagram, researchers sliced the brain of a male fruit fly into 66 separate fragments and scanned each piece repeatedly, according to project details reported by the BBC and translated outlets. Professor Gregory Jefferies of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge directed the research team. He described the advance to the BBC as a new pathway in neuroscientists’ understanding, comparing the technology to the invention of the telescope. The biological structure of the fruit fly brain is roughly the size of a pinhead, yet it operates with a level of efficiency that surpasses advanced supercomputers and artificial intelligence systems. Isabella Beckett, a co-lead author of the research article published in Cell, noted that roughly 95 percent of all cells are shared identically between male and female fly brains. Neural Differences Driving Aggression and Courtship

A deep analysis of the wiring diagrams uncovered specific circuits responsible for distinct behavioral traits in males. During courtship, male fruit flies continuously track females visually, a trait enabled by specialized structural components within their visual system that females lack. Furthermore, researchers identified an even greater divergence within the neural pathways linked to aggression. Because male fruit flies engage in fights more frequently than females, their brains possess a significantly higher density of neural connections dedicated to aggressive behavior. Another critical behavioral adaptation mapped by the team involves the production of mating songs. Male fruit flies emit unique auditory signals by vibrating their wings to court females, supported by a specialized nervous system circuit. Philipp Schlegel, a co-author of the study from the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, explained the precarious nature of this biological system to the BBC.
