Disoriented Marine Mammals Found on Central Coast Beaches
On November 30, 2024, members of the public reported disoriented marine mammals on Central Coast beaches. A sea lion was spotted under the Pismo Beach Pier, displaying signs of multiple seizures.
Wildlife groups from Oceano to Morro Bay have responded to numerous calls about sick and deceased dolphins, sea lions, and seals over recent months. Increased runoff and higher water temperatures are creating ideal conditions for algae growth. This algae can produce domoic acid, which marine mammals ingest through their prey.
Domoic acid poisoning leads to disorientation, erratic behavior, and head weaving. It can also cause seizures. If exposure is detected early, wildlife workers can help flush out the toxins. However, if the exposure causes lasting damage, it may affect the marine mammal’s brain function.
