Concerns Grow Over Slow Environmental Scheme Rollout for Farmers
Tim Farron, the MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, raised concerns about the government’s approach to farming support. He criticized the slow rollout of environmental schemes and the quick removal of old payment systems. He believes this change will negatively affect the poorest farmers, especially tenant farmers. These farmers may struggle to pay rent, which could lead to evictions within a year.
The government argues that farm support is at a record level. A representative from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) stated their ongoing commitment to farmers. They cited a £5 billion budget over two years, claiming it is the largest budget for sustainable food production and nature recovery in the country’s history.
Currently, more than 60,000 agreements for environmental land management schemes are active. The government promises to continue developing these schemes to aid farmers, promote sustainable food production, and support nature recovery.
