Coney Island Mermaid Parade Makes a Splash, Crowns King Neptune and Queen

The 43rd annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade drew an estimated 30,000 spectators and participants to the boardwalk. The parade, known as the nation’s largest art parade, featured elaborate, aquatically-themed costumes.
Noella Owen, 53, of Brooklyn, who attends annually wiht her two children, ages 11 and 12, lauded the parade as “a great expression of people’s creativity.” The trio sported handmade marine-centric outfits. Owen said her children dressed as krill, while she took on the role of a blue whale.
Caroline Northrop, 44, a public school teacher from Atlantic Highlands, N.J., also attended. She celebrated the parade as a unique “celebration of creativity,” especially in an age increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence. Northrop wore a “woodland enchantress” outfit.
Victor Gonzales, 39, a civil engineer from Queens, spent a month creating his lion fish costume. He explained the process involved sewing, structural design, and makeup artistry, taking about two and a half hours to get dressed on the day of the parade.
This year, Ukrainian-American singer Eugene Hütz, frontman for gogol Bordello, and Bed-Stuy-based pornstar Queenie Sateen were crowned King Neptune and Queen Mermaid.
Hütz, a New York resident since 1997, expressed his excitement at finally attending the parade and embracing his role.He said he usually tours during the event but was available this year.
