Connacht Rugby is setting its sights high for the 2025-26 season, aiming for a top-eight finish in the United Rugby Championship (URC) and a strong run in the Challenge cup. This ambition comes amid significant changes, including a new stand at the Sportsground, fresh coaching staff, ‍and emerging young talent. ‍Despite⁢ a challenging 2024-25 season, ‍the team is optimistic about the future.

The previous ‍season saw‌ connacht struggle with consistency, particularly in interprovincial matches, where ⁢they lost all six encounters. Their league⁣ form was inconsistent, and scoring against stronger opponents proved challenging. The team averaged 23 points per game,‍ ranking around ⁤11th in the ‌URC, while defensively, they conceded an average of 25 points, among the worst in the competition. Home form was⁤ also a concern,‌ with only four wins out of nine matches at the Sportsground. ⁢Ultimately, Connacht managed only‍ six wins from 18 URC ⁤games,‌ a performance below expectations.

However, the Challenge Cup provided a shining spot. Connacht secured five wins and delivered a memorable, ⁤high-scoring game against racing at home. Their‌ ambitious and energetic play‍ in the competition⁤ highlighted the team’s capabilities. Several players also distinguished themselves, including Ben Murphy, Sean Jansen, Paul ⁣Boyle, Peter Dooley, Shayne Bolton, and Finn Tracey.SHL was a standout performer and leader, returning from injury quickly.

Looking ahead, recruitment has been conservative, with only Sam Gilbert joining the squad so far,⁢ reflecting financial constraints. Despite these challenges, the foundations for a strong season are ‌in place. With new facilities, structures, and a core of ‍talented players, Connacht believes ⁣a top-eight URC finish and a ⁢Challenge‍ Cup semi-final appearance are attainable ‌goals.
