Connor McDavid Nears 1,000 NHL Points: Historic Pace and Elite Company

November 12, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

The Exclusive 1,000-Point Club in the NHL

Since the NHL’s inception in 1917, roughly 8,000 players have taken to the ice, making the 1,000-point club a highly exclusive achievement. As of now, 98 players have reached this milestone.

Historic Members

  • Gordie Howe was the first player to achieve 1,000 points, doing so on November 27, 1960, in his 938th game.
  • Jean Beliveau became the second member on March 3, 1968, in his 911th game.

Recent Achievements

  • John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs was the last player to join this club, reaching his 1,000th point on December 11, 2023, in his 1,109th game.

Upcoming Milestone: Connor McDavid

  • Connor McDavid, the Edmonton Oilers captain, is on the brink of becoming the 99th member of the 1,000-point club. With 995 career points, he is just five points away from this milestone. McDavid is on track to achieve this feat faster than many legendary players, including Peter Stastny, Jari Kurri, and Guy Lafleur[2].

Significance and Reflections

  • Reaching 1,000 points is a testament to a player’s hard work, skill, and longevity. "It’s an amazing accomplishment for anyone, but it reflects really well on your teammates and coaches," said Bryan Trottier. "You have to be put in the right places in order to excel offensively, you have to have players that complement you.

  • Sidney Crosby praised McDavid’s consistency and ability to elevate his game, especially in critical situations like the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Journey to 1,000 Points

  • Achieving 1,000 points requires playing with great players and being part of good teams. "You don’t take it for granted," said Denis Savard, recalling his own 1,000th point. "To get 1,000 points, it’s not easy to do. The longevity is something as well.

This milestone is not just a personal achievement but also a reflection of the team’s success and the player’s impact on the game. As McDavid approaches this mark, he is set to join an elite group of hockey legends, further solidifying his status as one of the game’s best players.
