Constellation, Meta Secure 20-Year Nuclear Power Deal for AI
Updated June 05, 2025
Constellation Energy and Meta Platforms have finalized a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) where Meta will receive the entire 1,121-megawatt output from the Clinton clean Energy Center in Illinois. The landmark deal, set to commence in June 2027, will supply zero-emission nuclear energy to bolster Meta’s expanding AI-driven data center operations and advance its commitment to 100% clean energy.
The agreement guarantees the Clinton plant’s continued operation beyond the expiration of Illinois’ Zero Emission Credit (ZEC) program, which previously saved the facility from closure in 2017. as part of the partnership, Constellation will enhance the plant’s capacity by 30 megawatts through uprates. This investment will preserve 1,100 local jobs and contribute $13.5 million in annual tax revenue. Additionally, Constellation will invest $1 million over five years in local community development initiatives in Clinton.
Meta’s Head of Global Energy, Urvi Parekh, emphasized the importance of this partnership. “This partnership secures clean, reliable energy that’s critical for our AI ambitions,” Parekh said. While the nuclear energy will feed into the regional grid, it will indirectly support Meta’s infrastructure, including its DeKalb, Illinois, data center.
analysts estimate the deal could generate $785 million in annual revenue for Constellation by 2030. It also sets the stage for future innovations, including the potential deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs), pending regulatory approval. This agreement mirrors a growing trend of tech-nuclear partnerships, similar to initiatives by Microsoft and Amazon, aimed at securing clean energy for their rapidly growing data and AI demands. This long-term power purchase agreement ensures a stable supply of zero-emission energy, crucial for Meta’s AI and data center operations, while also benefiting the local community through job preservation and economic investment. The deal underscores the increasing importance of nuclear energy in meeting the power demands of the tech industry and achieving clean energy goals.
What’s next
Constellation and Meta will continue to collaborate on innovative energy solutions, possibly including small modular reactors, pending regulatory approvals, to further support Meta’s long-term clean energy goals and AI ambitions.
