Addressing Housing Needs with Modular Construction
A new initiative is leveraging the potential of repurposed shipping containers to create sustainable and affordable housing. This approach offers a promising solution to address critical housing shortages and reconstruction challenges, particularly in regions impacted by natural disasters like Cyclone Chido.
The concept, successfully piloted in Mayotte since October 2025, is slated for expansion to Guyana and New Caledonia in 2026. This demonstrates a commitment to providing locally-relevant solutions to housing crises.
Skills Training for Mahorais Youth
Thirty young people from Mayotte are currently undergoing 8-10 months of specialized training in construction and renovation techniques. A key component of this program focuses on the innovative process of transforming shipping containers into habitable living spaces. This hands-on experience provides a valuable, certified skillset.
Currently, 13 learners from Mayotte and Reunion, including seven from Mahore, are participating in a training program in Brive, Corrèze, gaining practical experience in container conversion.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the SMA foundation and the TotalEnergies Foundation, both organizations dedicated to youth integration into the workforce. Jacques-Emmanuel Saulnier, General Delegate of the TotalEnergies Foundation, highlighted their support for over 100,000 young people in vulnerable situations annually through more than 100 partnerships.
