Addressing Housing Needs with Modular Construction

A ‌new initiative is leveraging the potential of repurposed shipping containers to create‍ sustainable and affordable housing. This approach offers a promising solution to address critical housing ⁣shortages and reconstruction challenges, particularly in regions impacted by natural disasters like‌ Cyclone Chido.

The concept, successfully ⁣piloted in Mayotte since October 2025,⁣ is slated for expansion‍ to Guyana and New Caledonia in 2026. This demonstrates a commitment to providing locally-relevant solutions to housing crises.

Skills Training for Mahorais Youth

Thirty young‌ people from Mayotte are currently undergoing 8-10 months of specialized training in construction and renovation ‍techniques. A key component of this program focuses on⁤ the innovative process of transforming shipping containers into habitable living spaces.⁢ This hands-on experience provides a valuable, certified skillset.

Currently, 13 learners⁢ from Mayotte and Reunion, including seven from Mahore, are‍ participating in a training program in Brive,⁤ Corrèze, gaining practical experience in container conversion.

Partnerships ‍Driving Social Impact

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the SMA foundation and the TotalEnergies Foundation, both ⁢organizations dedicated to youth integration into the workforce. Jacques-Emmanuel Saulnier, General Delegate of the TotalEnergies‍ Foundation, highlighted their support‌ for over‌ 100,000 young people in vulnerable situations annually through more⁢ than 100 partnerships.

General (2nd ‍Section) Jean-Pierre Metz, president of the⁢ SMA ⁢Foundation, emphasized ‌the shared commitment to professional integration of young‌ people.

This‍ initiative represents a⁣ forward-thinking approach⁣ to⁤ housing, combining sustainable practices with workforce development⁣ to create lasting positive‌ impact.
