The Netflix series “Someone Has to Know” has reignited public interest in the real-life case of Jorge Matute Johns, a 23-year-old forestry engineering student who disappeared in Chile in 1999 after being last seen at the La Cucaracha nightclub in Talcahuano. The show, which premiered in April 2026, is inspired by the true story of Matute Johns and centers on the alleged confession received by Father Andrés San Martín, the former parish priest of San Pedro de la Paz, who claimed to know the truth about the young man’s fate but was bound by the seal of confession.

According to multiple reports, Father San Martín was approached in the years following Matute Johns’ disappearance by an individual who confessed to involvement in the case. In February 2003, during a mass commemorating what would have been Matute Johns’ 27th birthday, the priest publicly stated that he knew the young man was dead and identified those responsible as individuals with influence in the community. However, he refused to name them, citing his ecclesiastical obligation to maintain the secrecy of the confessional.

The priest sought dispensation from the Vatican to disclose what he had heard, but his request was denied. Over the following years, he was summoned multiple times by civil courts to testify, yet he consistently upheld his position, leading to legal scrutiny and public debate over the conflict between religious secrecy and judicial transparency in cases involving serious crime.

Matute Johns’ mother, María Teresa Johns, has remained a prominent figure in the pursuit of answers. She has repeatedly criticized how her son’s case has been handled, including expressing concern over the Netflix series. In interviews, she has stated that while she understands the need to keep the case in public consciousness, she feels that the portrayal risks exploiting her family’s pain without contributing meaningfully to the search for truth.

The series has also drawn attention to the role of investigators in the original case. Reports indicate that the lead detective was eventually removed from the investigation, though the specific reasons for his departure have not been fully clarified in public records. Over the years, the case was reopened and closed several times, with various individuals questioned, but no one has ever been formally charged in connection with Matute Johns’ disappearance.
