Control DHF: Lutim Regency Releases Thousands of Tilapia
east Luwu Combines biological Control with Community Efforts too Combat Dengue Fever
The East Luwu Regency government launched a program on August 29, 2025, to release thousands of tilapia into ponds and water sources across four sub-districts - nuha, Towuti, Wasuponda, and Malili – to control the spread of dengue fever (DHF). this initiative targets breeding grounds for Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes in neglected areas within communities and schools.
Biological Control as a Safer Alternative
Tilapia were selected for their effectiveness in consuming mosquito larvae and their ability to thrive in diverse aquatic environments. Alimuddin, Head of Disease Prevention and Control, emphasized that this biological vector control method offers a safer and more environmentally friendly approach compared to relying solely on chemical insecticides.
“The release of larvae-eating fish is expected to suppress dengue events in the East Luwu region,” Alimuddin stated. He underscored, however, that sustained success depends on active community participation in the PSN 3M Plus movement.
Integrated Dengue Prevention Strategy
Officials are advocating for an integrated approach to dengue prevention, combining physical methods – such as draining standing water, closing containers, and recycling potential breeding sites – with biological controls like mosquito repellent plants and the tilapia release program. Chemical methods, including fogging and larvicides, remain part of the strategy but are being supplemented by these more lasting options.
The East Luwu Regency Government hopes these combined efforts will lead to a continued reduction in dengue cases throughout the region.
