The rector of the International School of Management (ISM) has formally defended the doctoral dissertation of Lithuanian Prime Minister Mykolas Sinkevičius, dismissing challenges to the work’s validity as calculated attempts to damage the Prime Minister’s reputation.

Institutional Pushback Against Academic Doubts

The defense comes amid a surge of public skepticism regarding the academic integrity of the dissertation. Reports from Lrytas and LRT indicate that critics have questioned whether the work meets the rigorous standards required for a doctoral degree.

The ISM administration has rejected these claims. In a statement reported by Lrytas, the rector asserted that the quality of the work is evident to any observer and that the alleged flaws are not supported by the actual text. To the rector, the academic merit is visible to the naked eye.

Political Weaponization of Scholarship

This is not an academic debate, according to the ISM leadership. The rector characterized the controversy as a political tool rather than a genuine inquiry into scholarship.

As reported by LRT, the rector stated that the discussion surrounding the dissertation is being used as a means to harm the reputation of the Prime Minister.

Media Scrutiny and Official Intervention

The dispute has permeated the highest levels of Lithuanian government and media. While 15min.lt detailed the rector’s specific responses to the challenges, Delfi reported that the dissertation has sparked a wide range of questions regarding its legitimacy.

The friction reached the presidency. According to vz.lt, the President of Lithuania has intervened, stating that Mykolas Sinkevičius should be allowed to begin his work.

The Tension Between Oversight and Stability

The ISM rector maintains the work stands up to scrutiny. Yet, the persistence of questions in outlets like Delfi suggests a lingering demand for transparency regarding the qualifications of the head of government.

Critics continue to contest the status of the dissertation.
