Project Overview: Killough Solar Farm
Marmoris Limited, trading as Killough Solar, proposed the construction of a 549-acre solar farm at Killough, located 6.5km south of Thurles, County Tipperary. The project, backed by John Magnier’s coolmore Stud, aims to contribute to Ireland’s renewable energy targets. Coolmore stud acquired Killough Castle and its 527-acre estate for a reported €6.5 million in early 2023 Independent.ie.
The planning application, approved by Tipperary County Council, granted a 10-year permission for 745,168 square meters of solar panels. Killough Solar projected the creation of 80 to 100 jobs during the 18-month construction phase.
Appeals Lodged with An Coimisiún Pleanála (ACP)
An Coimisiún Pleanála (ACP), the Irish planning appeals board, has confirmed the receipt of two third-party appeals against the Tipperary County council’s decision. The appeals were lodged by the Moycarkey community Association and a group represented by Thomas dwyer and Others. The specific grounds for the appeals have not yet been publicly detailed.
The ACP’s confirmation of the appeals effectively stalls the project pending a review. The ACP will now assess the validity of the appeals and may request further details from both the developers and the appellants.
Coolmore Stud’s Sustainability Initiatives
Planning consultants Fehily Timoney emphasized that the project is “designed to complement Coolmore’s environmental and sustainability initiatives while benefiting the local community.” Coolmore Stud, a prominent thoroughbred breeding operation, has increasingly focused on enduring practices in recent years. The solar farm is presented as a key component of these efforts.
