The price of Bremlykt, a butter and rapeseed oil blend, has seen significant increases in recent months. A 500-gram package cost 39.90 kroner in March at Rema 1000, dropping to 38.90 kroner in April. However, by October, the price had risen to 48.90 kroner, and currently stands at 52.90 kroner.
Bremlykt contains both dairy butter and rapeseed oil, both of which have experienced market volatility. According to Ivar Pettersen,a food scientist at alo Analysis,”There has been quite a sharp increase in milk fat and butter in Europe. Norwegian prices are now partly below prices in neighboring countries and there is a large turbulence on oils.”
However, Pettersen believes commodity costs alone don’t fully explain the price jump. “Such a great price increase in the final product is often difficult to predict with the commodity price as this roughly constitutes about 30 per cent of the cost in the final product on agricultural products. This means that you should have major changes in the commodity price to explain a 21 percent change in the final product.”
Line Aarnes, category and purchasing director at Rema 1000, stated via email, “We have received increased purchasing prices for Bremlykt in recent years, but simultaneously occurring it is indeed a competition-sensitive commodity. This means that prices can vary during the year, as now in April were we sold our 500 grams for just under NOK 40.”
Competitive Exposure
Kiwi also reports multiple price increases on Bremlykt in recent years. Communications director Kristine Arvin notes, “This is a very competitive product, which has at times been very price pressure and on several campaigns over the years.”
Oda declined to comment on the pricing of individual products.
