Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg has intensified the NBA Rookie of the Year race following a historic 51-point performance on April 3, 2026. The 19-year-old, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 Draft, became the youngest player and the only teenager in NBA history to score 50 or more points in a single game.

Flagg achieved the milestone during a game against the Orlando Magic, shooting 19 of 30 from the field for a 63.3% completion rate. Despite Flagg’s individual effort, which included 24 points in the fourth quarter, the Mavericks lost the game 138-127.

The performance places Flagg in an elite group of rookies. He is only the third rookie since the ABA/NBA merger in 1976 to score 50 points, joining Allen Iverson in 1997 and Brandon Jennings in 2009. Flagg surpassed Jennings as the youngest player to reach the 50-point mark, as Jennings was 20 years old when he scored 55 points.

The Race for Rookie of the Year

The Rookie of the Year race has evolved into a two-man competition between Flagg and Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel. The two players were former roommates at Duke University before entering the NBA.

Knueppel, the No. 4 overall pick, has been the presumptive frontrunner for much of the season. According to an ESPN straw poll published on April 3, 2026, and the Kia Rookie Ladder released on March 25, 2026, Knueppel has held the top spot in the race.

The contrast between the two candidates is reflected in their statistical profiles and team situations. Flagg has provided an all-around presence for Dallas, averaging 20.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. However, the Mavericks have struggled, holding the sixth-worst record in the league.

Knueppel has built his case through efficiency and elite three-point shooting. He is averaging 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, shooting 48.2% from the field and 43.1% from three-point range.

Team Impact and Performance

While Flagg’s individual numbers are high, Knueppel has been credited with helping drive winning for the Charlotte Hornets. Knueppel has integrated into a roster featuring offensive threats like LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, contributing to a momentum swing in the Eastern Conference that has the Hornets contending for a postseason spot.

Flagg’s journey has been more volatile, characterized by a shaky start followed by significant statistical growth. His 51-point game on April 3 came during a period of team struggle; at one point in the game, the Mavericks trailed by 30 points. Flagg was briefly removed from the game by assistant Frank Vogel with under four minutes remaining while the team trailed by 17 and Flagg had 45 points, though he was quickly returned to the game to reach 51.

It’s always fun getting into that type of mode. The basket feels big. Your teammates are looking out for you, helping you out. But I love to win, so that was my main focus. It’s hard for me to fully enjoy myself out there when we’re down 20, down 10, down 15 for the majority of the game.

Cooper Flagg

With the NBA regular season entering its final 10 days as of April 3, 2026, the race remains contentious. Flagg’s ability to produce historic scoring outputs may challenge Knueppel’s current lead, which has been predicated on consistency and offensive efficiency.
