West African health authorities have expanded a regional coalition dedicated to combating Lassa fever, focusing on the acceleration of vaccine development and the establishment of equitable distribution systems across the affected region.

The Lassa Fever Coalition, an initiative led by the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) and supported by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), has officially onboarded three new regional health partners: Bloom Public Health, Nigeria Health Watch and Corona Management Systems.

These organizations will join the Coalition’s Secretariat to support WAHO in managing the locally-led partnership. The primary objective of the expanded coalition is to advance the fight against the deadly haemorrhagic fever and ensure that future vaccines are introduced fairly across the nations most impacted by the disease.

Regional Cooperation and Membership

The coalition represents a coordinated effort among the West African countries most affected by Lassa fever. Current members include the Ministers of Health from the following nations:

The announcement regarding the new partners was made during the 26th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Health Ministers of ECOWAS, which took place in Praia.

Strategic Health Initiatives

The expansion of the coalition is framed as a shift toward regional ownership of public health outcomes. In Nigeria, these efforts are aligned with the National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which aim to build resilient health systems capable of anticipating and preventing outbreaks rather than merely responding to them.

Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Chair of the ECOWAS Assembly of Health Ministers and Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, emphasized the necessity of collective action in addressing the disease.

The expansion of the Lassa Fever Coalition is not just a strategic step—it is a powerful affirmation of what is possible when African nations rise together in common cause. I see firsthand the urgency of this moment. Lassa fever has haunted our region for decades—but it has also taught us that no country can stand alone. Our most effective defence lies in collective action—rooted in local leadership, guided by science and powered by trust.

The partnership underscores a regional commitment to ensuring that geography does not determine access to life-saving medical tools. By integrating local leadership with scientific guidance, the coalition intends to create a more sustainable defense against the viral threat.

Lassa fever remains a significant public health challenge in West Africa, characterized by its haemorrhagic nature and the need for specialized medical intervention. The coalition’s focus on equitable introduction of vaccines suggests a priority on removing barriers to access for the most vulnerable populations within the member states.
