Two colossal battery storage projects are set to transform Scotland’s energy landscape, marking a major investment in the UK’s renewable future. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), already the UK’s leading battery storage investor, is doubling down on its commitment with the construction of Coalburn 2 and Devilla, two of the largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Europe.

Located in South Lanarkshire and Fife respectively,these projects represent an investment of approximately £800 million. Coalburn 2 will sit alongside CIP’s existing Coalburn 1 BESS, while Devilla is nestled near the town of Kincardine.

Together with Coalburn 1, these three projects will boast a combined power capacity of 1.5GW, capable of storing and supplying the grid with a staggering 3GWh of electricity. That’s enough to power over 4.5 million households for two hours.

“Battery storage, when well located like our Coalburn and Devilla projects, enhances energy security, provides the grid with much needed adaptability and enables low-cost renewables to be deployed faster,” said Nischal agarwal, partner at CIP.

This investment comes at a crucial time as the UK pushes towards a greener energy future. The International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights the vital role battery storage plays in modernizing the grid.

“Battery storage can alleviate grid congestion in times of high supply, offering an outlet to capture and store excess renewable electricity that woudl otherwise be lost,” the IEA states.

The agency also emphasizes the rapid growth of battery technology, noting that it outpaced almost all other clean energy technologies in 2023. Though, the IEA stresses that a sixfold increase in global energy storage is needed by 2030 to meet climate targets.

CIP’s aspiring projects in Scotland are a significant step towards achieving this goal, demonstrating the company’s commitment to driving the transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy system.

CIP’s partner, Nischal Agarwal, emphasizes the importance of these projects: “These well-located batteries enhance energy security, provide the grid with needed flexibility, and enable low-cost renewables to be deployed faster.”
