Dakota Johnson Voices Concerns About Hollywood Originality
Dakota johnson recently shared her thoughts on the current state of Hollywood, particularly its struggle with originality and creative input. Her comments came during an appearance on the YouTube show Hot Ones, where she sampled spicy chicken wings while answering questions.
Johnson, star of the new film The Materialists, expressed frustration with the industry’s tendency to prioritize remakes and formulaic content over fresh, innovative ideas. She emphasized the importance of creative freedom for actors and filmmakers.
“It’s hard to be on jobs where you don’t have creative input… It’s hard when creative decisions are made by committee and by people who don’t even really watch movies, or know anything about them,” Johnson said, noting that studios often prioritize replicating past successes.
She added that audiences crave novelty and new experiences, suggesting that Hollywood’s reliance on familiar formulas ultimately misses the mark. “But humans don’t want that. They want fresh. They want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things. So I guess it’s all just a bit of a mess right now.”

Johnson also touched on her early experiences on film sets with her parents, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, and joked about her role in Madame Web, saying, “I’m also not a superhero. Tried. Failed.”
The Materialists, co-starring Chris evans and Pedro Pascal, premiered Friday. The film has garnered attention, with critics praising Johnson’s performance as Lucy, a character described as a “material girl, living in a material world.”
”Johnson gives her hero a jadedness that somehow stops short of being caustic or overly cynical. It’s not that Lucy doesn’t believe in love. She simply, not to mention literally, can’t afford to,” wrote David Fear in a review.
What’s next
Johnson is expected to continue advocating for more original and creatively fulfilling projects in Hollywood, both through her acting roles and her production company, TeaTime Pictures.
