Netflix has given a straight-to-series order for a limited drama series adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s 2001 novel, The Corrections, starring Meryl Streep. The project, which previously fell apart at HBO a decade ago, will be directed by Cord Jefferson, known for his work on American Fiction and Watchmen, according to reporting from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.
Franzen is adapting his own National Book Award-winning novel for television. The series will be a “sharply comic portrait of a Midwestern family whose three unmoored adult siblings desperately resist their mother’s wish for one last Christmas together – each undone by the delusional ambitions that were supposed to save them from becoming their parents,” Netflix said in a description.
Meryl Streep will portray the mother, Enid Lambert. The project has been in development since 2024, initially under CBS Studios before moving to Paramount Television Studios following the Skydance-Paramount merger. Netflix outbid other outlets to secure the rights to the series.
A Decade After HBO Attempt, Netflix Revives ‘The Corrections’
This isn’t the first attempt to bring Franzen’s acclaimed novel to the screen. A star-studded adaptation was previously in development at HBO, but ultimately fell through. The new iteration at Netflix marks a renewed effort to adapt the complex family drama for television, as reported by IndieWire.

The series is part of Netflix’s push to bolster its prestige drama slate, overseen by VP Nora Skinner, who was recruited from HBO by Head of UCAN (U.S. And Canada) Scripted Series Jinny Howe in 2024. This initiative includes other high-profile projects like Rabbit, Rabbit starring Adam Driver, Enigma Variations with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and So Far Gone.
Cord Jefferson’s Directorial Role
Cord Jefferson’s involvement brings a fresh perspective to the adaptation. He gained critical acclaim for his directorial debut, American Fiction, and has also contributed to the HBO series Watchmen. His direction is expected to capture the novel’s blend of humor and pathos.
Jefferson will direct all episodes of the limited drama. The project comes from Paramount Television Studios.
Critical Acclaim and Legacy of ‘The Corrections’
Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections was a publishing phenomenon upon its release in 2001, winning the National Book Award for fiction and being a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize the following year. The novel has been included on numerous lists of the best novels of the 21st century. Its exploration of family dynamics, societal anxieties, and the American Midwest resonated with readers and critics alike.
The Netflix adaptation aims to capture the essence of Franzen’s work, offering a nuanced and compelling portrayal of the Lambert family and their struggles. The series is expected to appeal to fans of the novel as well as viewers seeking high-quality, character-driven drama.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the series has been in development since 2024 with Streep attached throughout the process. The move to Paramount TV Studios followed the Skydance-Paramount merger last year.
The limited series is currently in pre-production, with further details regarding casting and release dates expected to be announced in the coming months.
