Last week, the Cork boxing community celebrated numerous achievements and milestones within and outside the ring.

A Night of Recognition and Community

The Togher Boxing Club recently hosted an event filled with enthusiasm and camaraderie. winning clubs of the prestigious Victor J. Aston Cup were honored with commemorative plaques, celebrating a history of excellence dating back to 2017. Former President of the Cork County Board, Dan O’Connell, was among the attendees, reflecting on both the progress made since the early 1970s and the vibrant present day of Cork boxing.

Dan O’Connell, who is a sponsor and former President of the Cork County Board: “What a magnificent site,” proclaimed a delighted O’Connell as he reflected back to his own time when he was president of the board. “Those were at first, very dark and difficult days for boxing in the southern capital. However, that was Cork in the early seventies. Today the dark days are gone, and the emerging sun now continues to shine brightly on the thriving sport.”

The legacy of Mr. Maurice Walsh, who passed away in September 2023 in Rural Ireland, continues to inspire boxers in Cork even before his time. Maurice Walsh was a well-respected figure widely known for his honesty, sense of purpose, and dedication to the sport. He spent over 42 years leaving a rich legacy of memories to his club and Cork boxing. Cited as a man of immense dedication, his “legacy is an invaluable contribution to the sport and his love for boxing is evident in the platform sporting communities within the county have received.” Dan O’Connell described Dan as “truly one of our own.”

The placement of the Maurice Walsh Perpetual Cup at the Cork County Boxing Championships further celebrates his legacy. A member of Walsh’s family will present this prestigious award during the championships, underscoring the enduring impact of his contributions. Emerging as a proud sport to the local community and fans across the island of Ireland, Cork Boxing clinics and training have become a model for youth communities across Ransome and surrounding towns.

The recent Munster Championships of cordially witnessed intense action between young talent.
