The Issue: High Clamping Rates at Cork Kent Station
Cork Kent Station has recorded the highest number of vehicle clampings among all train station car parks in Ireland in 2025, with 333 vehicles clamped as of October 25, 2025. This has reportedly generated approximately €41,625 in revenue for the station.
Political Response and Calls for Change
Labour Party representatives have voiced concerns regarding the high clamping figures and are advocating for changes to the current system. Senator Laura Harmon emphasized that the majority of parkers pay correctly and shouldn’t be affected by the current process.
Harmon specifically called for the removal of the requirement for immediate payment upon being clamped. She also highlighted the need for improved public transportation options to and from the station, suggesting this would reduce reliance on private vehicles. “The fact that Cork Kent also has the highest number of cars clamped so far in 2025 also signals the need for more reliable and timely public transport to and from the train station which would reduce the need for cars,” Harmon stated.
Labour Party TD for Cork North Central,Eoghan Kenny, described the clamping figures as “effectively a tax on commuters trying to do the right thing.” He proposed that parking at train stations should be free and advocated for clearer parking instructions, improved signage, and a modernization of the “archaic” parking machines.
safety Concerns Raised
Senator Harmon also raised concerns about the potential safety risks associated with clamping, notably for commuters arriving at their vehicles late at night to find them immobilized. “as a matter of public safety, clamping can also endanger commuters who arrive to their vehicle late at night to find it clamped,” she said.
Context and Potential Solutions
The debate over parking fees and clamping at train stations is part of a broader discussion about accessibility and affordability of public transport. While clamping is intended to deter illegal parking and ensure turnover, critics argue it disproportionately affects those who rely on train travel for commuting or other essential journeys.
Potential solutions being discussed include:
- Free Parking: Eliminating parking fees altogether.
- improved Public Transport: Investing in more frequent and reliable bus and train services.
- Grace Periods: Allowing a short grace period for payment after parking.
- Modernized Payment Systems: Replacing outdated parking machines with more user-kind options, including mobile payment apps.
- Clearer Signage: Improving the clarity and visibility of parking instructions and regulations.
