Addiction Drives Extensive Theft Campaign Across City
A 45-year-old man, whose shoplifting convictions were directly linked to funding a severe heroin and crack cocaine addiction, has been sentenced to 11 months in prison for a recent wave of thefts across Cork city. Edward Daly, residing at 8 Inchera lawn,Mahon,Cork, appeared before Cork District Court, where his extensive criminal history, including 55 previous convictions for theft, was highlighted by Sergeant Aisling Murphy.

Judge Mary Dorgan imposed the combined sentence for a series of offences committed between February and November 2024. The court heard that Daly’s criminal activity spanned various locations throughout Cork, including Mahon, Hollyhill, both shopping centres in Douglas, and the city center. “He has been all over the city,” Judge dorgan stated, emphasizing the broad geographical reach of his crimes.
The judge also underscored the significant financial toll these actions took on local businesses. “When you add up all the money involved it is quite sizable,” she remarked. “There is a considerable loss to shopkeepers.”

Thomas coughlan, defence solicitor for Daly, described his client as “extremely polite and never rises to a challenge. He is docile and always cooperative.” Coughlan explained that Daly’s behavior was a direct outcome of his addiction, and that his client “understands the retailers of Cork suffered a loss as a result of his addiction.” He further noted that Daly appeared “visibly improved since going into prison last week.”
