A man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping a teenage girl in Cork, Ireland, after coercing her into sexual acts by falsely claiming she owed him €12,000 due to a fabricated drug debt. Craig O’Connell, 26, of Hollyville, Hollyhill, Co. Cork, pleaded guilty to the rape, which occurred at a hotel on January 5, 2024.
According to reports from the Irish Examiner and RTE.ie, O’Connell convinced the then 16-year-old girl that he was associated with a criminal gang. He later alleged he had been caught with €12,000 worth of drugs and accused her of informing on him. O’Connell then threatened the girl, stating she could repay the money through sexual acts or face violence against her and her family.
He told the girl that she could repay the money, have sex with him or that other men would go to her home to hurt her and “butcher” her family.
Irish Examiner
The girl complied with O’Connell’s demands, believing she had no other choice. He recorded her performing a sexual act, claiming he needed proof. Following the initial act, O’Connell falsely asserted she still owed him €2,000. The girl subsequently sent him jewelry, including her mother’s wedding band and a €6,500 engagement ring – which was later recovered – a tablet device, cash, and €457 from three bank cards, totaling €11,555.
Gardai (Irish police) believe O’Connell’s claims of gang affiliation and the alleged drug seizure are untrue. In addition to the rape charge, O’Connell also pleaded guilty to making threats against the girl’s former boyfriend. He accused the boyfriend of being an informant and falsely claimed he owed a debt of €45,000.
The Irish Examiner reported that the former boyfriend, then 18, sold drugs for O’Connell in Limerick, Galway, and Cork in an attempt to repay the fabricated debt. O’Connell has 62 previous convictions, including 14 for deception, four for burglary, and three drug offenses.
Threats and Coercion
The case highlights the manipulative tactics employed by O’Connell to exploit and control the young woman. By fabricating a substantial debt and threatening violence, he coerced her into sexual acts and financial transactions. The investigation revealed the extent of his deception and the significant financial loss suffered by the girl and her family.

Previous Convictions
O’Connell’s extensive criminal history, including numerous convictions for deception and burglary, demonstrates a pattern of dishonest and exploitative behavior. His prior offenses underscore the seriousness of his actions in this case and contributed to the severity of the nine-year sentence.
The sentencing took place at the Central Criminal Court. No further details regarding potential appeals were immediately available.
