Millstreet Train Station Set for Major upgrade Following Planning Approval

Cork County Council has granted planning permission too Irish Rail for significant upgrade works at Millstreet train station, marking a crucial step forward in enhancing public transport connectivity and multi-modal journeys in the region.

The approved plans, submitted by Iarnród Éireann, outline a complete upgrade designed to meet growing demand and promote sustainable travel. Key features of the development include the addition of 46 new parking spaces, with a dedicated seven spaces equipped for electric vehicle (EV) charging. Complementing the vehicular improvements, the station will also benefit from 10 new bicycle parking spaces and a secure bicycle shelter, encouraging cycle-to-rail commuting. Furthermore, a new bus set-down and interchange facility will be established, fostering seamless transitions between different modes of public transport.Subject to the accomplished securing of funding, construction is anticipated to commence later this year, with completion projected for mid-2026.
Political Support Underscores Project importance
The decision has been met with widespread approval from local political representatives. Aindrias Moynihan, Fianna Fáil TD for Cork north West, welcomed the councilS decision, highlighting its importance for local public transport.
“This is a big milestone in improving public transport locally,” stated Mr. Moynihan. He further elaborated on the process, noting that Irish Rail’s next step involves securing funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to proceed with construction. Mr. moynihan also shared his satisfaction with having previously showcased the site and plans to the Minister for Transport, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to advance the project.
Echoing this sentiment, John Paul O’Shea, Fine Gael TD for cork North West, also expressed his delight at the news. He described Millstreet station as a “very well utilised” hub for both Kerry and cork commuters.
“To improve the parking situation there first of all is very significant,” Mr. O’Shea commented. “The pedestrian access from the town is going to be improved as part of it as well, so that is a huge positive.” He concluded by stating, “It is indeed very welcome news and it is good to see that Iarnród Éireann are investing in stations like Millstreet.”
