Understanding Huntington’s Disease

⁢ Huntington’s disease is a progressive brain disorder caused by a defective gene. This gene leads to the breakdown of nerve cells in⁤ the brain, resulting in movement, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms. Symptoms typically appear between ages 30 and 50, but can start earlier or later.
⁣

Key ⁣symptoms include:
⁣

  • Movement Disorders: Involuntary jerking or writhing movements‍ (chorea), rigidity, slow or‍ abnormal eye movements, impaired gait and posture.
  • Cognitive Impairments: Difficulty organizing, prioritizing, and focusing; lack of impulse control; difficulty learning ⁤new information.
  • Psychiatric Disorders: Depression, irritability, obsessive-compulsive⁣ behavior, and⁤ social withdrawal.

The disease is inherited, meaning a child of a parent with Huntington’s disease has a 50% chance of⁣ inheriting the gene and developing the condition. There⁢ are approximately 30,000 people with Huntington’s disease in the United States alone, and many more are at risk. Huntington’s Disease Society of America provides comprehensive information about the disease.
⁤ ⁤

Country Estimated Prevalence (Directly Affected) Estimated At-Risk Family Members
Ireland ~1,100 ~3,000
United states ~30,000 ~150,000
Worldwide ~140,000 ~700,000

The Gene Therapy Breakthrough

Details of the gene therapy trial are still emerging, but the approach involves using a viral vector to deliver a gene-silencing compound to ‍the brain. This compound‍ aims to reduce the production of the mutant huntingtin protein, which is the root cause of
