Coronation Street Villain Makes Shock Comeback After Two Years

Rupert Copley is returning to Coronation Street two years after his exit from the series in 2024. The character, played by Peter Carroll, is set to return to Weatherfield to target his old rival, George Shuttleworth.

The return was confirmed by the talent agency Thinking Actors, which announced that Peter Carroll would resume filming for the ITV soap during the week of April 13, 2026.

Financial turmoil for George Shuttleworth

The timing of Copley’s return coincides with significant professional and financial instability for George Shuttleworth, played by Tony Maudsley. Between April 3 and April 9, 2026, George appeared in court following a smear campaign launched against him by a customer.

The court ruled against the funeral director, ordering George to pay the associated legal costs. This outcome has left George devastated and facing potential bankruptcy for his business.

In conversations with his sister, Glenda, played by Jodie Prenger, George indicated that he may be forced to sell his business to rivals RestEasy at a knock-down price due to the financial strain.

Rupert Copley’s history in Weatherfield

Rupert Copley previously appeared on the cobbles as a trouble-making undertaker. During his initial tenure, which ended in 2024, he attempted to poach Todd Grimshaw as a work partner before he was eventually removed from the street.

The landscape of George’s professional support system has shifted since Copley’s exit. Todd Grimshaw is set to depart for Belfast in the company of Theo Silverton, potentially leaving George more vulnerable to Copley’s return.
