Coronation Street Wedding Chaos: Bernie’s Health Scare & Potential Cast Culls

July 28, 2025 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Coronation Street and‍ Emmerdale Stars ⁤Face‍ Axe Amid ITV Cost-Cutting Drive

Soaps brace for ‍meaningful cast reductions as producers overhaul scripts ⁤and shooting schedules to save millions.

ITV’s beloved soap operas, Coronation Street and⁣ Emmerdale, are reportedly‌ facing a considerable cast cull as the broadcaster implements a wide-ranging cost-cutting strategy. The ⁤move,⁢ driven by the need to save millions, is expected to see a significant number of actors dropped from the iconic shows.

Sources ⁤close to the production have revealed that the number of cast members is under intense scrutiny. It’s understood that ⁢ 84 regulars on Coronation Street and 70 on Emmerdale are among those who could ⁢be let go. This potential reduction comes as ITV undergoes a broader restructuring of its daytime programming, wich has already seen job losses impacting shows like Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning, and⁣ Loose Women.

Script overhauls and tighter Schedules

Beyond⁤ cast reductions, producers have been⁢ instructed to‍ revise scripts⁣ and episode structures. The aim is to reduce the number of scenes per episode and streamline ⁤shooting schedules, further contributing to cost savings. This strategic shift⁤ is designed to⁤ make the production of⁤ these long-running, expensive shows ‌more financially sustainable.

A source told The ‌Sun: “It’s brutal. ‍We’ve known it was on the ⁤cards for a while, but they’re ⁣really cranking it up now and⁣ it’s across the soaps. They’re looking to save millions and Corrie and Emmerdale are⁣ the obvious places.⁣ They’re very expensive shows.”

Impact on Long-Serving Cast Members

The current⁣ actor contract system, where most are paid per episode and guaranteed a set number ‍annually, is believed to have become unsustainable. This has led to concerns among ⁣some long-serving cast ⁤members about their job security, notably those who depend on the soaps for a⁤ consistent income.

“Many who have been⁤ there for a long time are reliant on their income ⁢staying as it ⁤is,” the source⁢ added. “The amount of cast has spiralled out of control and ⁤focusing⁤ on dialogue, not action, could also save ⁢money.”

The proposed cuts signal a significant shift in how these popular soaps will be produced, with a potential focus on leaner storytelling and a more streamlined cast to navigate the current ⁤economic⁣ climate. The ‍future of many familiar faces on‌ the⁢ cobbles and in the⁤ Dales remains uncertain as ITV navigates these challenging times.
