Cosgrave Family Reaches Settlement in High-Profile Construction Dispute
Dublin, Ireland - A bitter legal battle over control of the Cosgrave Group, one of Ireland’s most successful construction empires, has been resolved. Denise Cosgrave, widow of the late Joe Cosgrave, adn his brothers, Michael and william Cosgrave, announced a “thorough and amicable settlement” in the commercial Court on Monday.
The settlement brings an end to months of legal wrangling that began after Joe Cosgrave’s death in February 2022 at the age of 62. Ms. Cosgrave, acting as her late husband’s personal representative, had alleged that her brothers-in-law were attempting to seize control of the family business, which Joe Cosgrave had built into a powerhouse with an estimated net worth of €93 million.
As part of the agreement, Ms. Cosgrave will be registered as a shareholder in key group companies genstar and JOM Investments, securing her rightful place in the family business.
“The parties are pleased to announce they have resolved their differences and wanted to make a short statement,” said bernard dunleavy SC, representing Ms. Cosgrave. “This settlement is a matter of considerable relief to all parties where the proceedings have been a source of considerable upset.”
The settlement also includes a statement acknowledging that Michael and William cosgrave,along with the group’s chief financial officer,acted in good faith and for the benefit of the companies.Mr.Justice Denis McDonald, presiding over the case, expressed his delight at the resolution, congratulating all parties involved. He struck out the proceedings with no orders as to costs.The Cosgrave Group, known for its prominent projects across ireland, had remained tight-lipped throughout the legal proceedings. The settlement allows the family to move forward and focus on the future of the business, avoiding a possibly damaging public trial.
