University⁤ of California System Faces surge in Antisemitic Incidents

The University​ of California system documented 102 reported incidents of antisemitism across its⁣ ten⁣ campuses during the fall of 2023 and the ‌spring of 2024, ‌according​ too a report released January 26, 2024, by the⁢ University of California⁢ President’s office. This represents a 70% increase compared to ⁢the 60 incidents reported ⁣during the 2022-2023‍ academic year. The⁢ report details ⁤a range of incidents, from harassment and vandalism to threats and protests.

Incident breakdown by Campus (2023-2024)

  • UC Berkeley: 24‍ incidents
  • UCLA: 23 incidents
  • UC Davis: 13 incidents
  • UC Irvine: 11 ⁢incidents
  • UC San Diego: 9 incidents
  • UC Santa Barbara: 8 incidents
  • UC Santa Cruz: 5 incidents
  • UC Riverside: 4 incidents
  • UC Merced: 3​ incidents
  • UC San Francisco: 2 incidents

The report, commissioned by University of California President Michael V. Drake Jr., followed‌ a December 5, 2023, hearing before the House Committee ‌on Education and the Workforce, where he testified about​ antisemitism on college campuses. The UC system’s report acknowledges ⁣the impact of the Israel-Hamas war on the increase⁢ in reported incidents.

“The rise in ⁣antisemitic incidents is deeply concerning and unacceptable,” saeid President Drake in a statement accompanying the report. “The University ‍of California is committed to fostering a ‌safe and inclusive environment for⁤ all⁣ our students, faculty, and staff.”

Report Findings and Recommendations

The report⁤ identifies several factors⁢ contributing to the increase, including heightened⁤ political tensions and the‌ spread of misinformation online. It also notes‌ that many incidents occurred during or⁢ immediately after protests⁤ related to the conflict in the Middle East. ⁣The ​report recommends the following:

  1. Enhanced training for faculty, staff, and students on identifying and responding to antisemitism.
  2. Improved reporting mechanisms for antisemitic incidents.
  3. Increased collaboration between campus law enforcement and Jewish student organizations.
  4. Strengthened policies prohibiting discrimination and harassment.

The ⁣Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported a 388% increase in antisemitic incidents⁤ in⁤ the U.S. following the October 7,⁢ 2023, hamas attack on‍ Israel, according to a report released ​October 24, 2023. The ​ADL’s ‌data covers ⁣the period from october 7-23,⁤ 2023, and shows a significant ​rise in both online and offline incidents.
