The rising cost of raising a child in Ireland is a growing concern for parents, with expenses ranging from childcare and education to everyday necessities placing a significant strain on household finances. Recent discussions highlight the enduring financial burden, even after children reach adulthood.

A recent online forum discussion among Irish parents revealed anxieties about the escalating costs associated with each stage of childhood. One parent, with a two-year-old and another child on the way, expressed concern about whether there was “light at the end of the tunnel,” given current monthly childcare expenses of €800 and savings of only €3,000. The conversation quickly broadened to encompass the future costs of secondary school and college.

Childcare costs are a particularly acute pressure point. Parents in Dublin report annual expenses ranging from €12,000 to €16,000. Beyond the capital, concerns center on funding higher education. Secondary school costs are estimated at around €5,000 per year, covering fees, voluntary contributions, technology, extracurricular activities, and school trips.

The financial pressures extend beyond traditional educational expenses. The current housing crisis adds another layer of complexity, with some parents finding their adult children unable to afford independent living and remaining at home well into their twenties. This prolonged financial dependency adds to the overall cost of raising a family.

Data released by Laya Life in May 2025, as part of its ‘Cradle to College Cost Index’, quantified the overall financial commitment. The index found that the total cost of raising a child from birth to age 21 had reached €169,372.85, a 60% increase since 2015. This equates to an annual cost of €15,324.20, up 39% over the same period.

The most significant increases in costs were observed in essential items. The price of nappies soared by 188% between 2015 and 2025, reaching €1,456 annually. Baby formula prices also saw a substantial increase, rising 169% to €1,456. Food costs increased by 61% to €5,148, and pocket money rose by 37% to €4,536 per year.

Interestingly, some costs have decreased. Family holidays became 35% cheaper, falling to €1,079 from €1,653, and birthday presents saw a substantial decline of 70% to €148. University fees also decreased by 16% to €3,387.

Carmel Green, a financial services expert at David Kelleher Financial Services, noted that while headline inflation growth may have eased, the overall cost of living remains high. She highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by parents, even those with two incomes and financial expertise.

“We hear that headline inflation growth has eased but the cost of living has gone nowhere,” Green said. “I’m at the other end of the table, with children aged 18 and 20, and in the short term, costs don’t seem to be any easier.”

Green illustrated the financial strain with the example of her 20-year-old son’s university expenses. Accommodation alone would have cost €10,000, prompting the family to invest in driving lessons and a car as a more affordable alternative. This, however, impacted the student’s college experience, limiting opportunities for social interaction and extracurricular activities.

The rising cost of everyday items, particularly food, is also a major concern. Grocery price inflation increased from 6.25% to 6.82% over the 12 weeks to January 25th, with shoppers spending €1.2 billion and retailers experiencing a 5% sales increase.

“The cost of day-to-day items is a concern,” Green added. “And when you’re in the middle of what you can and can’t afford, it’s a very scary place to be.”

One parent shared a particularly stark example, describing the difficult decision between breastfeeding and using baby formula, ultimately choosing to breastfeed due to the prohibitive cost of formula. “That’s not what you should be thinking about when you have a new baby. You shouldn’t have to ask yourself if you can afford to feed that child,” Green commented.

Financial planning is crucial, according to Green, who recommends income protection insurance and early investment in a college fund. She also emphasizes the importance of financial literacy and budgeting, even when resources are limited.

“Children give you the most amazing life but trying to give them the best in Ireland is expensive. You must go into this phase of your life with your eyes open and my best advice would be to start planning for college,” Green advised. “I don’t care if it’s only €10 or €20 a month that you can put away. Just do it.”

One Reddit user, reflecting on the challenges, proposed a strategy of allocating 80% of childcare costs to a dedicated child expense account once a child starts school, reserving the remainder for future teenage and college expenses. Another user responded with a simple, empathetic, “Godspeed, friend.”
