Hollow Bottom Pub Closes in Cotswolds, a Racing community Favorite

The Hollow Bottom, a popular Cotswolds pub in Guiting Power, has shut down. The pub, located about 10 miles east of Cheltenham Racecourse, was a well-known spot for celebrating horse racing victories.
Jo Collinson, a groom who previously worked for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, recalled the electric atmosphere following Imperial Commander’s Gold Cup win in 2010. “It was just as amazing as Gold Cup day itself,” Collinson said.
Young’s, the pub’s owner, announced the closure Sunday, citing a review of their plans as the lease neared its end. the Hollow Bottom had previously closed in 2019 before being acquired and reopened by Julian Dunkerton’s Lucky Onion hospitality group. Young’s took over in 2022.
“We would like to thank the local community for their support over the last five years,” Young’s said in a statement. “We will be in contact directly with any customers who have future bookings with the pub.”
Collinson, now a groom for Jonjo O’Neill, reminisced about spending “every Christmas party and many birthday celebrations” at the Hollow Bottom during her time with Twiston-Davies, whose stables are in nearby Naunton. She helped lead three winning horses to the pub after races, including Imperial Commander after the 2010 gold Cup.
“There were people on the flat roof above the door, the cars couldn’t get through on the road, it was amazing,” Collinson said. “It was like leading him back in on the racecourse all over again… We piled down the Hollow Bottom to celebrate it for days.”
Collinson said the pub was always “wild” after race meets, regardless of the season. “A piece of my heart will always be at the Hollow Bottom, when we celebrated winners and had those Christmas parties there and had a lot of fun with the best friends,” she said. “It was the best times and I’ll never forget them.” The closure marks the end of an era for the local racing community.
