Cotter Planning Blues Repeat for 2025
Blues ready to Defend Title with Renewed Energy and Focus
Auckland, New Zealand – The defending champion Blues are feeling confident and prepared as they gear up for the new rugby season. head Coach Vern Cotter believes the team’s preparation is ahead of schedule compared to last year, when they clinched their first championship as 2003.
“We had a get-together a couple of weeks ago, and there was a great buzz,” Cotter said.”It was good to see everybody. Some guys need some regeneration time, and some are in the gym trying to get bigger and stronger, some guys are trying to get faster, and some are trying to do what they have to do to become good Blues men.”
Cotter, who recently extended his contract through 2026, emphasized the team’s dedication and meticulous preparation.”There’s been a lot of rugby and we’ve been watching a lot of rugby and watching players involved with the All Blacks, and players coming back from injury,” he explained. “It’s a constant living document around every individual and where they’re at.”
The Blues’ success last season can be attributed to Cotter’s unique coaching approach, wich balances hard work with a lighthearted atmosphere.
“We take our job seriously, but we don’t take ourselves seriously,” Cotter shared. “The key to it is making sure everything’s about having fun and you have your mixture of doing your job properly, and a bit of levity, a bit of fun, around that. It’s a good balance.”
This approach has resonated with both players and coaches, fostering a positive and driven habitat.
“It’s always good you can show a lighter side every so often and not get judged,” one coach remarked.
Looking ahead, the Blues are focused on maintaining their winning momentum.”What’s meaningful is what happens next, our focus moving forward, and there’s a keen focus to keep winning,” Cotter stated.”And we, the boys, understand now what it takes to win. And we keep driving that desire to win and to become better. We want to make sure that it keeps moving forward.”
Cotter is particularly proud of the team’s self-sufficiency and ownership, evident in their pre-final training session.
“the players have got it, and now we’re taking ownership, and they’re taking obligation,” he said. “That was an awesome feeling.”
The Blues’ connection with their fans has also grown stronger, thanks to initiatives like the team bus walk-through before games.
“It’s a real connection,” Cotter noted. ”It was great, and the players enjoyed it. I was apprehensive at the start to see how it would be received, but it became better and better, and I could feel the energy. It’s great, and it will be interesting to see how far it goes and gets picked up.”
With a renewed sense of purpose and a strong bond with their supporters, the Blues are poised to make another run for the championship.
