Chicago State Women’s Golf Team Finishes Strong at HBCU National Championship

Weston, Fla. — The Chicago State women’s golf team concluded their participation in the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) National Championship with a commendable seventh-place finish. The team amassed a three-round score of 837, with rounds of 333, 330, and 174, respectively. The final round was notably a nine-hole contest, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of the team.

Begona Perez led the team with a three-round score of 202, finishing 22-over par. Her performance included rounds of 79, 78, and 45. Another standout was Gia Lamba, who secured a top-30 finish with a three-score round of 206, placing 26 overall, which was 26-over par. Lamba’s rounds were 81, 81, and 44.

The Cougars are scheduled to return to action on March 10th to defend their title at the Starks Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee. This event promises to be a significant test of their skills and determination, following a quarterfinals bonus appearance in their play against further competitive rounds in ‘24.

The event was hosted by ARCIS Golf at The Club at Weston Hills in Weston, Florida, on Feb. 23-24.

North Carolina A&T, Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M, and Southern also showcased their prowess, finishing within the top six. These institutions have historically been stalwarts in collegiate sports, and their performances reflect the competitive landscape of HBCU athletics. Delaware State, with a score of +157, concluded the top eight.

Begona Perez, who secured a reputation with top scores early in the championship, commented on the challenging nature of the tournament, reflecting on the need for precision and resilience. This underscores the mental toughness required in championship golf, which often determines the outcome more than raw skill alone.
