The saga of The Boys, the Amazon Prime Video series based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, has reached its conclusion. The eighth and final episode of the fifth season, titled “Blood And Bone,” premiered on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, answering the central question that has defined the series: whether anyone is capable of stopping the villainous Homelander.

The series, which was designed by showrunner Eric Kripke to run for exactly five seasons, concluded with the titular group of vigilantes joining forces with Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban, in a final attempt to end Homelander’s reign.

Critical Reception and Fan Reaction

The final season received significant critical attention. In a five-star review of the first six episodes of season five, NME stated that the show avoids the traps that most final seasons stumble into by chasing a clear endgame, instead of trying to constantly subvert expectations. Funny, crass and devastatingly poignant, those hoping for a suitable send-off will get the bloody masterpiece they were searching for.

Following the broadcast of the finale, fan reactions have been intense, with some viewers comparing the conclusion to the ending of Breaking Bad. Showrunner Eric Kripke has responded to critics of the finale by declaring that those expressing complaints are watching the wrong show. The series also drew public scrutiny from Elon Musk, who labeled the finale pathetic.

The Strategy to Neutralize Homelander

The finale centered on the question of Homelander’s invincibility. At the beginning of the episode, Homelander appeared to be an unstoppable force as he prepared for a televised address from the Oval Office, where he intended to declare himself a god-like ruler. His own allies expressed fear of him due to his effectively indestructible nature.

The group eventually identified a method to strip superpowered individuals of their abilities through a character named Sage. The team observed the effectiveness of a new anti-V weapon when Sage was deliberately provoked into using it on Kimiko; Sage lost her powers completely and was able to walk away, proving the weapon’s efficacy.

The Final Confrontation at the White House

The climax of the series involved an assault on the White House, supported by Ashley. During the ensuing chaos, several key conflicts occurred: Annie engaged and killed The Deep, while Hughie and M.M. Worked to lure the character Oh Father away from the primary battle. This diversion allowed Billy Butcher and Kimiko to confront Homelander directly.

The turning point of the battle arrived when Homelander’s son, Ryan, chose to side against his father, assisting Butcher in holding him down. Kimiko then utilized the anti-V effect on Homelander, Butcher, and Ryan simultaneously, neutralizing the Compound V in their bloodstreams.

The impact of the anti-V was immediate. Once his invulnerability was stripped, Homelander became frightened and pathetic, begging Butcher to spare his life. Butcher refused the plea and killed him.

The Fate of Billy Butcher and the Series Conclusion

The death of Homelander triggered a psychological collapse for Billy Butcher. Devastated by Ryan’s rejection of him and the news that his dog had died, Butcher spiraled toward a final, destructive act. He traveled to Vought Tower with the intention of releasing a virus designed to kill all superpowered people indiscriminately.

To prevent the release of the virus, Hughie ultimately shot and killed Butcher. The series concludes with the deaths of both Homelander and Butcher, and the disbandment of the Boys. In the aftermath, Vought has returned to the control of Stan Edgar. Ryan has been taken in by M.M., while Hughie and Annie prepare to pursue a normal life together.
