Horner Addresses Potential Ferrari Move

Christian Horner has fueled speculation about a potential move to Ferrari following comments made in an interview with the Times while promoting his new book. When asked if he would consider a job at Ferrari, Horner called the squad the biggest brand and the sleeping giant in Formula 1, noting it is the dream. Horner also stated during the interview, At this stage in my life, there’s only one team for which I would accept non-participation in ownership. Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur offered a blunt response to the remarks after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, stating that everybody knows Mr Horner is looking for a job everywhere. Vasseur added that the resulting media speculation meant Ferrari was not working in the perfect serenity.

Obstacles Facing a Potential Ferrari Appointment

Significant structural and personal hurdles stand in the way of any potential pairing between Horner and Ferrari. Horner has maintained throughout his career that a Formula 1 team requires a single person in overall control, a level of authority he is unlikely to receive at Ferrari under chairman John Elkann and chief executive officer Benedetto Vigna. Similar tensions regarding ultimate control ultimately led to Horner’s departure from Red Bull, where he answered to headquarters in Austria. Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has expressed a lack of enthusiasm for Horner over the past few years, and Horner carries substantial baggage from his exit from Red Bull.

Red Bull Tenure and Recent Leadership Changes

During his two decades leading Red Bull, Horner achieved remarkable success, capturing eight drivers’ titles, six constructors’ championships, and 124 grands prix. However, the operation unravelled during his final 18 months following accusations of sexual harassment and coercive, controlling behaviour made by a female employee. Red Bull dismissed those allegations after two internal investigations led by external lawyers. The fallout nonetheless contributed to chief technical officer Adrian Newey leaving the team after feeling his role had been diminished by Horner. Newey’s departure was followed by long-time sporting director Jonathan Wheatley and head of strategy Will Courtenay. Red Bull ultimately dismissed Horner following a competitive slump that leadership concluded he could not arrest. Reflecting on the dismissal in the Times interview, Horner stated that the only justification provided by Red Bull was that it was more Christian Horner Racing than Red Bull Racing. He also described himself by saying, I am a bit of a Marmite character. I know I’m not everybody’s cup of tea. It’s impossible to be. He added, I’m the cure and the problem.

Upcoming Formula 1 Schedule in Malaysia

Formula 1 travels to Malaysia this weekend for the upcoming race at Sepang, which serves as the host venue for the Bahrain Grand Prix. That event was postponed from its original April slot due to the war in the Middle East. Addressing fan questions about the final two races of the season, BBC F1 correspondent Andrew Benson noted that Formula 1 as the commercial rights holder decides the calendar, while the FIA effectively only rubber-stamps the decision. F1 currently plans to conclude the season in its original order with Las Vegas followed by Qatar and Abu Dhabi over the final two weekends of November and the first weekend of December.
