For years, doctors have observed a curious phenomenon: patients wiht multiple sclerosis (MS) rarely develop Alzheimer’s disease, even when they have genetic risk factors. Now, a team of researchers at Washington University in St. Louis may have uncovered why.
Their study,published in [Journal Name],found that people with MS are significantly less likely to have the molecular hallmarks of Alzheimer’s,specifically amyloid plaques in the brain. This finding, based on blood tests and brain scans of 100 MS patients, challenges conventional thinking and opens up exciting new possibilities for Alzheimer’s research.
“We were struck by the fact that none of our MS patients seemed to develop typical Alzheimer’s,” said Dr. Anne Cross,one of the study’s authors. “Even when they experienced cognitive issues, further evaluation ruled out Alzheimer’s.”
This observation led the team to investigate further. Using a new FDA-approved blood test called PrecivityAD2, they compared amyloid plaque levels in MS patients to a control group of 300 individuals without MS. The results were striking: 50% fewer MS patients showed evidence of amyloid pathology.
The researchers also found a correlation between the severity and duration of MS and the reduced risk of amyloid buildup. This suggests that something inherent to the MS disease process itself may offer protection against Alzheimer’s.
“It’s possible that the immune system’s activity in MS, which attacks the central nervous system, also helps clear amyloid plaques,” speculates Dr. Matthew Brier,another led author.
while more research is needed to fully understand this connection, the findings offer a glimmer of hope in the fight against Alzheimer’s.
“If we can identify the protective factor in MS and replicate it, we could possibly develop new therapies for Alzheimer’s,” Dr. Brier said.
The team is now focusing on identifying the specific genetic and biological mechanisms at play.
