Council of Europe to Showcase Groundbreaking AI Framework at UN Internet Governance Forum
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Council of Europe will be taking center stage at the 2024 UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from December 15th to 19th. A key focus will be the Council of Europe’s groundbreaking Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights,Democracy and the rule of Law. This first-ever international treaty on AI will be the subject of a dedicated event on December 15th, featuring a panel discussion with government representatives who played a crucial role in its negotiation.
“The rapid development of AI presents both opportunities and challenges,” said Thomas Schneider, Vice-Chair of the Council of Europe’s committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAI). “Our Framework Convention aims to ensure that AI is developed and used in a way that respects basic rights and values.”
Beyond the treaty itself, the Council of Europe will also showcase its HUDERIA Methodology, a practical tool designed to help public and private stakeholders assess the potential risks of AI systems. A dedicated session on December 16th will explore how HUDERIA can support the implementation of the AI Convention and promote responsible AI development.
The Council of Europe’s commitment to digital governance extends beyond AI. On December 15th, a session will delve into the importance of international consensus on definitions related to privacy and data protection. Drawing on the Council of Europe’s Convention 108, the discussion will emphasize the need for clear and consistent standards to safeguard personal data while facilitating the free flow of information across borders.
